How to download, decompress and view/print

Downloading

For those files that are not in Text or HTML format you have to download the file. Sometimes this is the default action after a mouse click. Sometimes (e.g. Netscape for MS-Windows) you get a menu: Choose "Save to file". If you get an error message, check if your preferences are right. For Netscape check out "Options - General Preferences - Helpers".

Decompression

Most files accessible via this page are compressed with ZIP. On DOS systems you would use

pkunzip -e -d file

On UNIX systems you should try to enter unzip -x file

If these programs don't exist on your system, you can download them from the Internet:

Viewing & Printing

PostScript files (.ps, .eps, .PS, .EPS) can be sent directly to a PostScript printer. If you don't have access to such a printer or if you want to look at the document, try
ghostview file
If this doesn't work, try
gs file
to invoke Ghostscript. If you don't have Ghostscript, either, you should get it from the Internet: You can also search Archie with the key word "aladdin" or "unzip" or "pkz204g.exe" to find the closest FTP server to your location.
In order to run Ghostview, the graphical PostScript viewer, you need to have Ghostscript. Both programs for all important operating systems can be found in the FTP directories listed above.
Ghostscript and Ghostview can visualize and print PostScript files on a variety of printers. Consult the Ghostscript documentation to find out how to print a PostScript file on your printer.
