From today's networks to broadband ISDN

Growing demands

(Despite|In spite of) the enormous capacity of the world-wide telecommunications networks with about 420 million main stations and (despite|in spite of) further speciali(s|z)ed networks by far not all of (today's|the present and future) requirements and wishes of the users and providers of telecommunications services (are fulfilled|have been fulfilled).

(Apart from|In addition to|Besides) the improvements and (extensions|supplements| completions) of existing services - more comfortable performance (characteristics|specs|features) for the [tele]phoning, shorter transmission times for telexing, (higher|improved|better) resolution for [tele]faxing - (users demand|there are demands) for further (functions|features), e.g. mail-box for speech, texts and images and for new broad band services such as:

The demand for such broad band services (to some extent|partly|in part) even exists today, (to some extent|in part) originates with the further development of networks, storage systems, computers and terminal equipments - and with falling costs and fees.

Infrastructure and "open communication"

In order to (satisfy|meet|fulfil) (present|today's) demand and future needs for information- and communications services, (an appropriate|a suitable) infrastructure is (required|necessary):

"Open communications" is the (precondition|prerequisite|(fundamental|basic) condition) for (smooth|easy|unproblematic|problem-free) (world-wide|global) telecommunications. The public telephone (system|network) - being the "largest machine of the world" - is the most well-known example for (it|this|that). In contrary to today still frequently common, non-compatible (island|single) solutions it is a must for the new services that open communications (become|are) (implemented|put into practice|reali(s|z)ed) (In contrary to ... still usual today). Connected with the (increasing|rising) use of personal computers capable of communicating, workstations and multifunctional (terminal equipment|terminals) this is an important prerequisite for the (broad|wide-spread|extended|extensive) use powerful services.
