Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous Tense
(used for activities that started in the past and are still going on until the present day)

Note: Activities that started in the past and reach into the present do require the use of the present perfect or present perfect continuous.
In these structures
for is used to describe a time span (for 6 months, for 3 years, etc.)
since to describe a point in time (since 1980; since I first met her, etc.)
In many cases, the present perfect continuous is being preferred to the normal present perfect. Rule of thumb: verbs that do not describe a sequence of time but simply state a fact are mostly used in the present perfect.
Ex.: I have had this car since 1988.
I have known her for 8 months.
I haven't seen her for ages.
